MEDICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Remove gauze prior to taking any medications. DO NOT USE A STRAW for approx. 4 days after surgery.
This list may not include the medicine(s) you were prescribed, but covers the majority of the medications typically prescribed.
1st: Amoxicillin, Clindamycin
(Oral Antibiotic Medication)
Please take medication as directed by Dr. Bohannan; Dr. Bohannan will usually request that you start taking this oral antibiotic the day prior to your scheduled surgery, three times daily. Complete the full course of antibiotics as directed until completely gone.
Important Information for Women of Child-Bearing Age
Recent studies have shown that antibiotics may reduce the effect of birth control pills. If you are currently taking birth control pills, please take the appropriate precautions while you are taking the antibiotic so that an unexpected pregnancy does not occur.
2nd: Lortab, Vicodin, Hydrocodone, darvocet/propoxyphene, perocet/oxycodone (Pain Medication)
This medication can make you very drowsy; it is not advisable to drive while taking this medication. Always eat before taking this medication or drink a glass of milk prior to taking this medication to settle the stomach. Otherwise, it can make the stomach very upset. Take one or two tablets every four to six hours as needed for pain control. During the day, if the prescribed medication is too strong, you may use any over-the-counter pain/anti-inflammatory medication such as Aleve, Advil or Motrin (Ibuprofen) can be combined with the pain medication. You may take three (200 mg) tablets or 600 mg every six hours with food, and use prescribed medication only as needed. You may also use Tylenol however, DO NOT COMBINE TYLENOL WITH YOUR PAIN MEDICATION, as your pain medication contains Tylenol (Acetaminophen).
3rd: Peridex (Antibiotic Mouth Rinse)
Please wait 24 hrs. after your surgery before using this antibiotic mouth rinse. Swish and spit rinse for one minute, three times daily for ten days. NO EATING, DRINKING OR BRUSHING YOUR TEETH FOR ? HR AFTER USING RINSE. This antibiotic mouth rinse can stain your teeth if it is used over a long period of time. Please use as directed after your surgery. Do not use any other over-the-counter mouth rinse after your surgery unless advised by our office.
In some cases, Dr. Bohannan may ask you to sample the pain medicine. Since 5% of patients who take a narcotic can get sick to their stomach, this test dose can determine if you are sensitive to the medicine before surgery rather than finding out after surgery when you need the medicine. Since it is impossible to know if you are going to be sensitive to the medicine youve never taken, the only way to find out is to introduce the medicine to the patient. Take the medication some evening before your surgery after a meal. Likely you will just become a little drowsy and that is normal, but if you develop nausea or a rash or have itching, call the office and an alternate drug will be prescribed.
