GENIOPLASTY
Genioplasty and Chin implants (Genioplasty)
In cases where patients have weak chins or over protruding chins, a simple in office procedure that moves the chin back or forward, depending on the situation, can correct the problem. Occasionally, a chin implant is placed to enhance or strengthen the appearance of the chin when moving the chin forward is not an option. Unlike traditional chin implant surgery, genioplasties are performed inside the mouth and therefore no visible scars are seen on the patient. In patients with weak chins, as the chin is moved forward, the neck skin is tightened and the patient experiences a lifting appearance which usually improves the effects of aging on the neck skin (lower facelift). This can be combined with other procedures, such as cervicofacial liposuction, to enhance the rejuvenation effect of the genioplasty.
Before Surgery
To better understand your overall health, we will evaluate your medical history prior to surgery. In addition, a complete examination of your ears is made in order to take the most effective surgical approach. Usually the procedure is performed with an intravenous sedation.
Dr. Bohannan will provide you with pre-operative instructions that may include the elimination of specific drugs containing aspirin several weeks before surgery to minimize excess bleeding. Antibiotics may also be prescribed to prevent infection.
Digital photographs are taken in order to document the amount of improvement after surgery.
After the surgery, youll rest in the office until you are ready to go home. Youll be biting on some gauze to control minor bleeding. Ice is very important the first 24-36 hours after surgery. You should expect some moderate swelling and some bruising in the area for about 7-10 days. It is not unusual to have some residual numbness to the lip and chin area for a little while post-surgery. All of the post-operative materials and instructions, will be review thoroughly with you and your escort the day of surgery in both written form and orally. We typically see the patient back in a few days for a check up and possibly to remove some sutures.
